Everything Old Becomes New Again: Antique Bed Frames
Article by Aleksandar Bryson
No matter how modern we become, the past and it’s history seems to have a hold on most of us. Perhaps, that is why antiques are so popular. They serve as a reminder of our history. Each antique cup, chandelier, and antique bed frame has it very own unique history. It doesn’t matter if the antique piece resided in the palace of kings or in the simplest one room log cabin, the quality and workmanship of these pieces speaks of a distant past when everything was done by hand and when people took great pride in their workmanship.
It is no wonder that antique bed frames have started to make a popular comeback. They have popular looks that are classic and chic and come in a variety of materials and styles. Whether the frame is Iron, brass, or wood these pieces are prized possessions in many homes. And well they should be, as true antique frames can costs thousands of dollars some as high as 0,000 and more.
These bed frames are ideal for country cottages and Victorian homes adding warmth and authentic old world charm you simply can’t find in any other type of frame. Unfortunately, due to the modernization of bedroom furniture, today’s mattresses rarely fit these frames. While many people solve this problem by deciding against purchasing an actual antique and having a replica made that is suited to mattresses sizes today other simply go full steam ahead and make changes in these antiques such as affixing the headboard to a wall and using a more modern bed frame or actually changing the bed frame itself to fit modern size mattresses.
While the latter two solutions may make the bed usable it does in effect make it no longer antique. They now simply have either an old looking or an old bed frame fitted to accommodate a more modern mattress. To remain an antique a product must adhere to it’s natural form and in the United States to it’s natural hardware. Any changes reduces the worth of the antique and puts the piece in a completely different category.
Considering the quality of workmanship and hours of labor that were put into these fine pieces and the fact that these pieces have survived a 100 years or more, it seems somewhat sad that these fine pieces of human history should be changed simply to accommodate today’s modern trend in bed sizes. There is a solution to the problem that will make these beds usable. It is actually quite simple. Instead of changing the frame to meet modern size specifications for mattresses why not have a custom made mattress made to fit the bed itself? Not only will you be saving a part of history but, you will actually be keeping the value of the product you spent so much on.
All one has to do is look at some of these fine pieces and see the beautiful hand carvings and the skilled workmanship that has gone into these pieces of furniture to know that it is well worth the effort to preserve them for future generations. In some cases it is better to allow that which is old to become new again while keeping its history and uniqueness alive.
